From ‘No More Questions. The Final Travels of U G Krishnamurti’ by Louis Brawley

The whole chemistry of the body changes, so it begins to function in its own natural way. That means everything that is poisoned (I deliberately use that word) and contaminated by the culture is thrown out of the system. It is thrown out of your system and then that consciousness of life (or whatever you want to call it) expresses itself and functions in a very natural way. The whole thing has to be thrown out of your system; otherwise, if you don’t believe in God, you become an atheist and you teach, preach and proselytize atheism. But this individual is neither a theist, nor an atheist, nor an agnostic; he is what he is.

The question has disappeared. The whole thing is finished for me……. This non-event caused a sudden explosion inside, blasting, as it were, every cell, every nerve and every gland in my body. And with that ‘explosion’, the illusion that there is continuity of thought, that there is a centre, an ‘I’ linking up the thoughts, was not there any more.

Until the sales pitch of enlightenment is thrown out of your system by the simple confrontation with its futility, it will continually mislead you, and once it is kicked out, you will see that there is no need for it. What was baffling and convincing about the case of UG was that it appeared to have fallen away without his volition. He didn’t know how it happened that he gave up.

…..I …. wandered over to the Juhu beach area, supposed to be an upscale neighbourhood …..wasnt the same as a walk in an upscale New York neighbourhood. Here poverty seeped between all cracks.

It astonished me that whole days could go by in this way as I sat in that room of strangers, all of us suspended in the air like dust motes, floating carelessly in a shaft of light called U. G. Krishnamurti.

‘Red bag, table, chair, hard, soft! That is you, nothing else. You are a collection of memories, definitions. You never once look without telling yourself what it is you are looking at!’

‘You are all looking for happiness without one minute of unhappiness. That is the ultimate search, whether or not you seek it in a bar or in a temple makes no difference.’

‘Don’t quote the source, you are original!’

You are conditioning your mind through all this lingo – that is all it is necessary for you to see.

Why do you bother about those fellows? They are dead. You should pitch them in the river. And yet you don’t; you keep listening to someone (it makes no difference whom), and you keep hoping that somehow, tomorrow or the next day, by listening more and more, you will get off the merry-go-around.

We met for dinner and I pressed for clarification about what was happening with the Californian. She assured me there was absolutely nothing happening, then suggested I spend the night since it was already late. I accepted her offer and restarted the engines of misery.

To put it in the boxing ring phrase, you have to ‘throw in the towel,’ be totally helpless. No one can help you, and you cannot help yourself.

Yogini was living next door …..we escaped to her room and went for walks. We spent hours wandering over the fields of the Bernese Oberland, which really is a most beautiful place. On one walk she told me about her favourite movie, where the heroine married men and then murdered them for their money. Nice. I lived with similar fantasies.

The group dissolved into the night like tattered bits of wet tissue paper.

Every time a thought is born, you are born. When the thought is gone, you are gone. But the ‘you’ does not want to let the thought go, and what gives continuity to this ‘you’ is the thinking.

The consciousness which is functioning in me, in you, in the garden slug and earthworm outside, is the same.

The structure which is always thinking of every possible situation, envisaging every situation, how to be prepared, to deal with each and every kind of situation that might arise during the course of your life, is a thing that has no meaning, because every situation is quite different.

‘If you are not thinking in terms of right and wrong, you will never do wrong. As long as you are thinking of right and wrong, you will always do wrong.’

Sri Ramakrishna was an uneducated villager who used the extremely vulgar expressions of his village Bengali. UG once told Guha, a Bengali, to read the Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna cover to cover in the original language, so that he could see for himself how the man spoke. UG used to point out that the translators had cleaned up the text.

…..One could sense that UG actually held Ramakrishna in high regard

…..I was told he used to be full of praise for Ramana Maharshi and Sri Ramakrishna. Now he expressed nothing but contempt for them. In fact, he was doing everything in his power to destroy the images people were building in their heads about such people.

‘UG, we all saw you were asleep during the conversation. How do you explain your memory of it?’

‘Sir, this body is totally relaxed. The recording goes on all the time no matter what. There is no UG there to focus on anything so it all comes in and is recorded. Even in you the recording is going on all the time, but you are all the time practicing selectively and censorship. Since there is no UG here, there is no editing and I have much more energy than you do. …..Also this body can hear even while it is what you call sleeping.’

Listening to other people is what you have been doing all your life. It is the cause of your unhappiness.

‘If there is only one thing you want, just one, you will surely get it.’

Man cannot become man as long as he follows somebody.

It may seem even stranger to make a note of it but his penis really was like that of a child, which he said was a side-effect of his calamity.

A few times he said to me: ‘Look, sir, its useless! You mean to say I could have sex with that? I never, never would have expected this to happen, you cant imagine; it’s the end of you as you know yourself!’

It was chilling to see the physical evidence of that. Not exactly the image of enlightenment bandied about in the marketplace. The purely physical process he described was a rare and painful mutation that finished him, not to mention these side-effects.

Perhaps I can give you the ‘feel’ of this. I sleep four hours at night, no matter what time I go to bed. Then I lie in bed until morning fully awake. I don’t know what is lying there in the bed; I don’t know whether I’m lying on my left side or my right side – for hours and hours I lie like this. If there is any noise outside – a bird or something – it just echoes in me ….

……If the question is asked, ‘What is in there?’ there is only an awareness of the points of contact, where the body is in contact with the bed and the sheets, and where it is in contact with itself, at the crossing of the legs for example. There is some kind of heaviness, probably the gravitational pull, something very vague. There is nothing inside which links up these things. Even if the eyes are open and looking at the whole body, there are still only the points of contact and they have no connection with what I am looking at. If I want to try and link up these points of contact into the shape of my own body, probably I will succeed, but by the time it is completed the body is back in the same situation of different points of contact. The linkage cannot stay. It is the same sort of thing when I am sitting or standing. There is no body.

‘The light shineth in the darkness and the darkness comprehended it not.’ It was one of his favourite lines to quote from the Bible.

‘Burn it to the ground, sir! See what comes up in the ashes.’

UG used to say he learned more from his newborn son in the first two years of his life than from any spiritual or secular teacher.

There is a sensation in you, and you say that you are depressed or unhappy or blissful, jealous, greedy, envious. This labeling brings into existence the one who is translating this sensation.

‘I can sit here in this chair forever. I am never bored. You people are bored because you think there is something more interesting happening somewhere else.’

‘If I could give you just a glimpse of this, I’m telling you, you wouldn’t want to touch it with a ten-foot pole!’

He condensed his teaching into two words: ‘Your job in life is to shut up!’

The culture has made it impossible for the personality to express itself in its own way, because the culture has different ideas.

‘I don’t know what to do, I am helpless, totally helpless’ – as long as you think you are totally helpless, you will depend on some outside agency.

‘The ego is nothing but the conflict between right and wrong, good and bad. It is an abstraction, it does not exist.’

You separate yourself from that awareness and create an entity which is not there actually.

…..that quote I later found out was attributed to the renunciate Shiva:

On whomsoever my grace falls, he will be robbed and stripped naked and left standing in the streets.

Geissman also pointed out that UG was a product of a tradition that specifies that when you come into something of your own it is your duty to destroy what has gone before you.

I am all the time trying to knock off the reference point.

Nisargadatta had a brilliant way of putting it: ‘Spirituality is nothing more than understanding this play of consciousness – try and find out what this fraud is by seeking its source.’

An English lady asked him boldly: ‘But UG, don’t you have any powers? Couldn’t you give someone a push in some way?’

Her question reminded me of UG’s question to Ramana Maharshi, ‘What you have, can you give it to me?’ His answer was actually not so different:

‘Yes I have, but this is a very violent thing. I’m telling you, you wouldn’t want this thing!’ Then a pause: ‘It is not like a dove descending on your head!’

‘The desire for permanence in every area is the cause of human misery.’

When once it throws out everything that has been put in there by your filthy culture, this body will function in an extraordinarily intelligent way. It can take care of everything.

The native intelligence of the human body is amazing. That is all it needs to survive in any dangerous situation in life.

An enlightened man can never have sex because he cannot reproduce another one like him. Once an interviewer on television asked m, ‘Cant we take your sperm and make a woman pregnant?’ I answered, ‘There is no sperm any more.’ Anandamayi stopped having her periods when she was twenty-one, after whatever had happened to her. She was a nice lady. She was a genuine article.

‘This body is a solidified imagination.’

A couple of times I went down and sat in his apartment around dusk. There were disembodied presences floating through the place, as if looking for him. I’m not prone to sensing that sort of thing, but it was undeniable. They were just there and then after a couple of days it stopped. ‘Just because you don’t see them, doesn’t mean they aren’t there.’

‘The only thing that will happen around me is that people’s burden will be lightened a little, that is all.’

From ‘reflections of an Extraordinary Era’ by Tara Gandhi Bhattacharjee

The simplicity of Gandhi’s actions, thought and food was a reflection of his ideals. His purity was so overpowering that I would hesitate to pick up even his slippers. His slippers would be cleaner than my hands and I would be scared of dirtying them. Bapu-ji would touch even inanimate objects so gently it seemed as if they too had souls. Every time I dispose of trash, I think of my grandfather and the dignity with which he would do the task.

……one of Mahatma Gandhi’s talismans:

‘I will give you a Talisman. Whenever you are in doubt or when the self becomes too much for you, apply the following test: Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man whom you may have seen and ask yourself if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him. Will he gain anything by it? Will it restore him to a control over his own life and destiny? In other words, will it lead to swaraj for the hungry and spiritually starving millions? Then you will find your doubts and your self melting away.’

From ‘Practicing the Power of Now’ by Eckhart Tolle

The beginning of freedom is the realization
that you are not “the thinker.”
The moment you start watching the thinker,
a higher level of consciousness becomes activated.
You then begin to realize that there is a vast realm
of intelligence beyond thought, that thought is only a
tiny aspect of that intelligence.
You also realize that all the things that truly matter -
beauty, love, creativity, joy, inner peace -
arise from beyond the mind.
You begin to awaken.

When your consciousness
is directed outward,
mind and world arise.
When it is directed inward,
it realizes its own Source
and returns home into the Unmanifested

Identification with your mind creates an opaque screen of concepts, labels, images, words, judgements, and definitions that blocks all true relationships. It comes between you and yourself, between you and your fellow man and woman, between you and nature, between you and God. It is this screen of thought that creates the illusion of separateness, the illusion that there is you and a totally separate “other.” You then forget the essential fact that, underneath the level of physical appearances and separate forms, you are one with all that is.

Start listening to the voice in your head as often as you can. Pay particular attention to any repetitive thought patterns, those old audiotapes that have been playing in your head perhaps for many years.

This is what I mean by “watching the thinker,”…….

So when you listen to a thought, you are aware not only of the thought but also of yourself as the witness of the thought. A new dimension of consciousness has come in.

As you listen to the thought, you feel a conscious presence – your deeper self – behind or underneath the thought….. The thought then loses its power over you and quickly subsides, because you are no longer energizing the mind through identification with it.

When a thought subsides, you experience a discontinuity in the mental stream – a gap of “no-mind.” At first, the gaps will be short, a few seconds perhaps, but gradually they will become longer. When these gaps occur, you feel a certain stillness and peace inside you…… With practice, the sense of stillness and peace will deepen. …..As you go more deeply into this realm of no-mind, as is sometimes called in the East, you realize the state of pure consciousness.

…….Just become intensely conscious of the present moment. …..

One day you may catch yourself smiling at the voice in your head, as you would smile at the antics of a child.

Direct your attention into the body. Is there any tension?

Once you detect that there is a low level of unease, the background static, see in what way you are avoiding, resisting, or denying life – by denying the Now.

The key is to be in a state of permanent connectedness with your inner body – to feel it at all times…… The more consciousness you direct into the inner body, the higher its vibrational frequency becomes, much like a light that grows brighter as you turn up the dimmer switch and so increase the flow of electricity. At this higher energy level, negativity cannot affect you anymore, and you tend to attract new circumstances that reflect this higher frequency

Whenever an answer, a solution, or a creative idea is needed, stop thinking for a moment by focusing attention on your inner energy field. Become aware of the stillness.

When you resume thinking, it will be fresh and creative.

St. Paul expressed this universal principle …. “Everything is shown up by being exposed to the light, and whatever is exposed to the light itself becomes light.”

…Jesus said: “Look at the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin.”

If your overall situation is unsatisfactory or unpleasant, separate out this instant and surrender to what is. That’s the flashlight cutting through the fog. Your state of consciousness then ceases to be controlled by external conditions. You are no longer coming from reaction and resistance.

Then look at the specifics of the situation. As yourself, “Is there anything I can do to change the situation, improve it, or remove myself from it?” If so, take appropriate action.

From ‘The Psychology of the Esoteric. Insights into Energy and Consciousness’ by Osho

Just see things; don’t verbalize. Be aware of their presence but don’t change them into words. Live with things without language; with people without language; with situations without language.

Sartre has given his autobiography the name Words. It is the autobiography of everyone more or less. We live in words. That is, we don’t live. And in the end there is only a series of words accumulated and nothing else.

…..the posture that Buddha uses, padmasana. This posture is one of the postures in which the least energy is needed …….a circuit is created……All the outlets are connected. Both feet are crossed, both hands are crossed, and hands touch the feet and feet touch the sexual center, the sex center …..no energy can go out and the posture is erect so there is no gravitational pull.

…..Eyes are closed or half closed, because eyes are also a great outlet for psychic energy ……If the eyeballs are moving then energy is being thrown out.

There is a saying of Lao Tzu: “Seek, and you will lose. Do not seek, and find.”

But Hinduism is still more complex and deeper, deeper. That’s why Hinduism could develop a different dimension of Tantra, so that whatsoever you call sin, even that can be used. Hinduism is in a way very healthy – chaotic, of course, because anything healthy is bound to be chaotic….It cannot be systematized.

From ‘Sparks of Divinity. The Teachings of B K S Iyengar. From 1959 to 1975’. Compiled by Noelle Perez-Christiaens

Once he told the boys: “The strength of the will is in the buttocks. If you can sqeeze those muscles, if they are strong, you have the force of will.”

We should have a purpose, see it clearly, then get detached from it completely and work.

It is from the spinal column that all the nerves come, and each ends in a pore of the skin. You must control each nerve and each centimeter of the skin.

Love must be incarnated in the smallest pore of the skin, the smallest cell of the body, to make them intelligent, so they can collaborate with all the other ones, in the big republic of the body.

Relaxation means emptiness

The eyes must go to the region that does not work, not to the one that does.

From head to heels, find your center.

While doing the postures, your mind should be in half-consciousness, which does not mean sleep. It means silence, emptiness, space, which can then be filled with an acute awareness of the sensations given by the posture. You watch yourself from inside. It is a full silence.

The body has to be invaded by the intelligence; each part has to become intelligent.

When the active brain becomes passive, the passive brain becomes active. That is meditation.

Everyone has a side which is better than the other. Balance between Ha, the right, and tha, the left, is yoga. Perfect harmony means perfect control……

When I ask you to stretch your spine, you stretch in the middle where susumna is, but you should relax in the middle and stretch on both sides.

You cannot say you are intelligent if you do not also have body intelligence.

Just as a goldsmith purifies gold, so must the body be constantly purified and purged, so that the inner gold may shine.

The mind, the thinker, must be made utterly and completely still to know what the Self is.

An alert, erect spine creates a spiritual intensity of concentration that burns out distracting thoughts and the brooding over past and future, and leaves one in the virginal, fresh present.

If a man has valor, but his sword is rusty, of what use is his valor? If a man has spiritual aspirations but his body is corrupt, of what use are his aspirations.

Be so silent that you hear the sound within ….

Yoga is the process of stilling the mind and then merging the individual soul (jivatma) with Universal Soul (Paramatma)

Think light! Try to impart a feeling of lightness to the body. …This can be achieved by mentally extending yourself outwards from the center of the body i.e. think tall.

During inhalation, the bredth should move exactly like clouds spreading in the sky.

As long as the body is not held firm, meditation is impossible, because the movement of the body is a disturbance of the intellect.

When the brain and the mind are silent, one experiences the consciousness of the self.

When in mediatation, look with your ears, not with your eyes. When you look with your eyes, the brain is aggressive (that is, when you concentrate on an object with the energy concentrated in the frontal brain, where the eyes are). When you look with the ears, the brain is silent. Ears bring the art of silence. Eyes bring the art of action.

An ethical diet is to eat as long as saliva comes in your mouth when seeing a meal, and to stop at the very moment it doesn’t come.

In pranayama, when you inhale, do not disturb the position of the consciousness of the brain or the eyes or the eyelids. Let them explore or see into the lungs and into the spine. Then your will understand what I said.

The ribs are the wings of the body. Open your wings.

The inner gaze must be in the center. If consciousness is in either one of the feet, the posture goes off balance.

Samadhi is where everything is stilled, where you are completely conscious.

Yoga makes an extrovert from an introvert, and an introvert from an extrovert

The intelligence should be everywhere. Your intelligence is only in the brain; that is why you;re suffering.

Pupils should be self-aware, not self-conscious.

When one is in a meditative state, the frontal brain is resting, and the back of the brain is acting.

You should know how to relax in action.

When you have learned to stretch completely, you have learned to relax completely.

We have two physical eyes, but every pore of the body is also an eye.

Even the little toe has to work to retain its awareness.

Why do you live in memory? Memory is useless if you repeat the past; memory is necessary if you use it to develop. If repetition is taking place, then that memory retards the path of evolution.

Awaken the dormant intelligence even in the minutest fiber. This will help the neighbouring fibers to revitalize, to realize their functions, to act, to experience what you have created.

When we look at something with intensity, this intensity lasts only a few seconds, then we do nothing more than look in the mirror of the mind. We must keep the initial intensity for a longer time. ……

If the chest is the mother and the air the child, with inhalation the mother lets her child come to her, and with exhalation she lets him go without following him but still protecting him.

In kumbhaka, you should not hold the breath, but the breath should hold you.

When you close your eyes, do not just close your eyes. The right and the left ears have to move inwards for the eyes to close. ….

And the state of absolute calm? When both inhalation and exhalation are done without any sort of tension, without any sort of support, it becomes absolute meditation.

The brain watching the mind and the mind watching the brain, so there is no movement in the brain and the mind. And that is meditation

In inhalation, normal inhalation, the cosmic energy is brought in and embraced. In exhalation, the individual energy is drawn out so that it completely mingles or is united with the universal or cosmic energy.

Exhalation is the art of surrender.

If you open the armpits, the brain becomes light, and you cannot brood or become depressed.

Circumferential action occurs when the vertical and horizontal meet. If you have to stretch vertically, stretch horizontally as well. When you stretch both ways, the brain is mature.

If the throat is passive, the mind is quiet

Regarding relaxation: Let the facial skin drop sideways. Let both eyes be equally passive.

To understand the world, you open your eyes. To understand the inside world, you should close your eyes.

Use fully whatever limited intelligence you have, then automatically it opens a little more and can accumulate more.

When the pose is perfect, there is morality.

Opening the eyes wide releases pain and stops dullness of the brain.

The front brain deals only with the external world. Quieten this brain and retire within. The back brain leads inside…. Use the back brain for meditation.

Meditation is one of the hardest and finest adjustments of our intellect.

For a wrong done by others, men demand justice, while for that done by themselves, they plead for mercy and forgiveness. The yogi, on the other hand, believes that for a wrong done by himself there should be justice, while for that done by another there should be forgiveness. He knows and teaches others how to live. Always striving to perfect himself, he shows them by his love and compassion how to improve themselves.

The still waters of a lake reflect the beauty around it. When the mind is still, the beauty of the Self is reflected in it.

There should be constant analysis throughout the action, not afterwards. This is understanding. The real meaning of knowledge is that your action and your analysis synchronize.

Create awareness in your pupils.

Learn to find passivity in activity.

While doing yoga, your body must tell you what to do, not your brain.

We behave as though we know more than we actually know.

Watch your base; be attentive to the portion nearest the floor.

Regarding sitting pose: Surrender the spine to the floor

You must have millions of eyes watching the body.
